Create a chic breakfast bar space.

No kitchen breakfast bar is complete without a couple of stools or chairs. A few well-chosen bar stools at your countertop doubles its functionality and turns it into a casual eating area as well as a space to prep food.

It's also another opportunity to layer in some style to your space. You can use bar stools to introduce pops of colour to an otherwise drab white kitchen island, keep it pared-back with wood, or bring in rich textures with a leather or boucle finish.

Breakfast bar stools also provide a casual place to perch when entertaining friends and family before dinner – especially if you've created a lovely home bar to gather around. There are plenty of sizes and styles available for all budgets, along with adjustable and half-height options, so you should find something to suit your space.

Even in the most compact of spaces where a freestanding breakfast bar or peninsula is used as an alternative to an island, you can opt for small or narrow bar stools to fit into tight spots.

There's been a growing trend for breakfast nooks and bar table set ups, with an increase in site searches for kitchen stools and small tables. 'Every nook and countertop is a chance to add practical value to the kitchen,' says Tom St Quintin, furniture buyer at Furniture Village. 'There's more demand for compact, minimalist pieces that provide places to eat and entertain that can be easily tucked away when not in use.'

Here's our edit of 20 beautiful breakfast bar stools for your kitchen-diner or home bar area.

Pleasingly-priced bedding brand Dusk has expanded its range in recent months, adding a wealth of furniture in its signature understated style to its well-loved selection of sheets. These classically-shaped bar stools, finished in a breezy lightweight linen weave, will warm up minimal schemes – or go more moody and opulent with the deep blue velvet option. You can save 20 per cent now, as a bonus.

Here's a really sleek set. Slim tapered legs, deep-toned mango wood seats and an angular shape make it a seriously stylish option. Swoon manufactures all its pieces by hand, one-at-a-time, by talented furniture artisans, so when it's delivered to your door you know you'll be getting something a bit special.

We love rattan furniture and this chair is a great example of why. This bar stool has a breezy, retro look that will add a sense of fun to a space. It comes in two colours and there is a matching table – although this piece's evident versatility would see it blending well in many interior schemes from ultra-traditional to chic and modern.

These bars stools are chic and cool, and their understated nature is offset with a pop of fun powder blue. Coming as a set of two, they're also one of the more well-priced options in our round-up. Finish with a bright cushion or leave just as they are.

And here's a similar version from Dunelm, making for a good cheaper alternative if you can forgo the peppy blue colour. Again, its simple design makes it a good choice for the vast majority of schemes, so it's a good bet if you ask us.

For something opulent and glamorous, this is a fab option. Bold, chunky gold legs and a deep teal velvet seat pad make it feel super luxe. Add a couple to your home bar area, pour yourself a Cosmopolitan, and enjoy!

In a pleasing wishbone design, this Dunelm breakfast bar stool looks considerably more expensive than its price tag would suggest. A wood frame and paper cord seat bring rustic appeal and the black frame adds modernity. But if this isn't your colour, no worries – it's available in six different finishes including grey, walnut and white.

If you want to add a bit of influencer glam to your kitchen, you could do much worse than this set of faux leather bar stools. A pearly grey shade, roll top back and tufted finish will bring some girly elegance home. There's a whole range available to complement – you can buy these chairs as a pair or with a bar table, as well as dining table sets, beds, side tables, sideboards and wardrobes – to name a few!

So this is pricey, but you do get two, and it's no less than we'd expect from achingly cool modern furniture brand Zuiver (check out the brand's terrazzo pieces and tell us you don't love them). The olive green hue paired with cane seats makes for an understated appeal that'll add some chicness to your kitchen diner – think Soho House vibes or that trendy new bistro that's just popped up in town. There's also a taller version available for an extra £20.

Here's a gorgeous piece from our House Beautiful Marketplace. Adding a bit of velvet is an easy way to up the sophistication level of a space. The black seats feel chic and cool, and the contrasting metallic gold stand brings some extra warmth.

Velvet always brings a little bit of luxe to a space, so we had to include this Homebase gem. Smooth curves and a chunky frame give this pretty bar stool an Art Deco sensibility at a low price.

Copper is warm, versatile and glamorous without being overtly feminine. Adding a few touches here and there makes an easy way to elevate a space into something a bit more special.

John Lewis' ANYDAY range contains many interesting pieces at prices that genuinely surprise us, and this bar stool is one of them. It's minimal without feeling stark, and comes in four colours so you can mix and match or just find the right one for your space. Have a look at the buyer pics on the product page – they contain some lovely inspiration on how to use these chairs to best effect.

We're getting really vintage vibes here from this Rockett St George number; a shop that's one of our go-tos when we're looking for statement pieces. Gold legs bring some glamour to an otherwise understated piece, adding a fun twist to a simple shape.

These lovely stools, with angular metal legs, toe the industrial line without feeling too stark, thanks to the warm wooden tops. As an FYI, these are the bar stools we have in our own busy kitchen, and they have held up beautifully over the last couple of years – they're easy to clean and still look fabulous to date.

These are understated in a sense, but the chunky legs and velvet finish still give them a good presence. They're also a bit of a bargain at under £90 for the pair, as they're currently on sale! Even better? Postage is free; a rarity when it comes to furniture delivery.

As well as being very well priced for a set of two, these slimline stools are perfect for small flats or galley kitchens where space is at a premium. One note? They're on the shorter side, so not one for extra-tall counters – but they'd work well as a savvy seating solution for kitchen tables in bijou rooms.

M&S has a very similar version. This is a more expensive option, especially as it's sold singularly rather than as a pair. Nonetheless, it comes in both this sultry dark blue as well as white, and there's a 10-year guarantee in contrast to Argos' one-year.

Handcrafted by talented artisans, the Loko bar stool is made from gorgeous sustainable mango wood, so it's as eco-friendly as it is attractive. The footrest adds some extra functionality to an otherwise very minimal piece.

We'll finish off with a versatile one. This stool comes in 13 colours, which is the largest range we've seen in our round up. You can also choose between brass, chrome and black legs, so there's an impressive amount of customisation on offer here. It's also on sale, bringing the price to below £100, which is fab value.
